Day 5 – Sunday 1st March 2026

So, four days of fantastic, competitive Squash have led to Finals day, where the National titles will be decided.

Women's Over 65: Top seed Jill Campion of Wales, a five-time National Champion was the player to beat here. Home club star Tammy Bennett (SRY) went two up against her but lost a 13/11 fourth, and the resilient Welsh player won through to meet a former World Masters Champion Karen Hume (KNT), who had ousted defending Champion and no. 2 seed Lesley Sturgess (DYS). The first three games of the final were fierce, but it was Campion who emerged 2/1 up, and she took the fourth for the title. Good to see Hume coming back to form after injury.

Women's Over 60: Played in a round robin pool, the top two players deservedly met in the final. Rose Bamber (AVN) is a four-time Champion and faced 2025 Champion Heather Tweedle (MSY). This was a cracking match with two evenly matched players battling for every point. Tweedle edged 2/1 up, but the Avon lady summoned all her experience to snatch the fifth game 11/9 for her fifth National.

Women's Over 55: Defending Champion Helen Barnard of Wales has had some injury issues of late, but now looks to be back to form. In the semi-final, she was tested by Scotland No. 1 Donna Cruikshank, winning in four, but in the final, she faced the British Open Champion Jillian Lilico (HFD). Barnard's athletic game paid off as she went two up, but Lilico's skills made the third a real battle, and the Wales player would have been relieved to take it 13/11 for the win.

Women's Over 50: A particularly competitive group with several players capable of winning. Top seed and defending champion was Rachel Calver (LEC), but she had a hard fight to overcome former champion Sarah Parr (BRK), who had herself only just survived a magnificent match against Kate Smith (YKS). In the other half, two former winners of this event in Louisa Dalwood (HFD) and Christine McMullen (CHS) had a four-game match won by McMullen, but in the final the elegant Squash of Calver saw her pull away from one game each to a four-game win and fourth National for her.

Women's Over 45: British Open and European Champion Kate Bradshaw (HFD) was top seed here and there was something inevitable that she and defending Champion Catherine Ruffle (CBA) would meet in the final. The two top women in the age group duly obliged and after a comfortable first to Ruffle and superb match ensued with the Cumbrian woman just having the edge to get home 11/9. 13/11. for her third National Championship.

Women's Over 35: This group is particularly strong with some fine players joining last season. 2025 Champion Emmeline Gale (SRY) was top seed and would have enjoyed seeing no.2 seed Kirsty West (CHS) have another brutal match with Masters newcomer Kelly Eastment (SSX), a two-time winner on the circuit this year. West outlasted the skilful Eastment in five and took that form to the final, where she took her first National title in straight games in a devastating display.

Men's Over 80: One of the puzzles of Masters Squash was solved here. How did Chris Ansell (BRK), with World, European and British Open Masters titles, never win a British National title? Well, he did here. But new in the group Robert Smith (KNT) burst onto the 80s with a fine semi-final win over defending Champion Allan Whittow (BUX) in five games, with the first four being extremely close. This set up a final with Ansell, who removed John Culverhouse (KNT) in four. All those major finals gave Ansell the edge, however, and he produced a masterful display to join that elite club with all the big titles.

Men's Over 75: To be honest, there is only one player who is going to win this! Ian Graham (SSX) already has European and British Open plus two Regionals this season and is in a class of his own. In the final, he again met current World Masters Champion Larry Grover (HPH) who, as he had at those World Masters, defeated a former Champion in Barry Featherstone (HPH) in five hard games. The final was all about Graham's class, and he powered to a fourth National 3/0.

Men's Over 70: The defending Champion, Stuart Hardy (WLT), was favourite here, but a ruptured Achilles tendon in his semi-final with David Matthew (CNL) ended his hopes. In the other half, Rob Ballingall (BUX) was felling higher seeded players and met Matthew in the final. It proved to be an intriguing clash of styles with the smooth control of the Cornishman and the speed and mobility of Ballingall. The latter edged 2/1 up but was pulled back, and it was Matthew who finished the stronger in five. A first for him and Cornwall.

Men's Over 65: Some intriguing matches in this very strong event. Top seed was former top pro player Bryan Beeson (NLD), who earlier this season won the European Masters Championship. Also, the British Open Champion James Ockwell (MDX), the Champion of the last three years Allen Barwise (CBA) and the legendary 8 times National Champion Mark Woodliffe (GLS). Beeson was too good for Ockwell in a classy battle of the left-handers, and Woodliffe just had a bit too much for the powerful Barwise. In a top-quality final, Woodliffe controlled the rallies beautifully and took the title in three close games.

Men's Over 60: Alex Betts (MDX) was rightly top seed here after an excellent Regional season. He had shared the spoils with Simon Spencer (NOT), but Betts nearly came unstuck in the first round, needing five games against the talented David Gray (CBA). In the semi, he dispatched former Champion Jon Foster (HPH) while Spencer had the expected torrid battle with four-time Champion Eammon Price (HFD). The final was close and from the top drawer. Spencer took the first, but Betts has been close to the big titles before and was not going to let it go easily. He struck back and, with great squash from both men, took the fourth 13/11 for his first and much-deserved National title.

Men's Over 55: Once again, a draw in which any of several players could come through. England star Sam Hanbury (SSX) removed top seed Stuart Hargreaves (YKS), a former British Open Champion, and lined up against Steve Evans of Wales, who has had an excellent Regional circuit and impressed with his extra fitness. He needed that against former Open and National Champion Steve McLoughlin (HPH) as both men showed superb mobility and retrieving. The final was four games in 50 minutes, with two of them going into extra time. Crucially, Evans took them and the title. A first for him and a good day overall for Wales.

Men's Over 50: Alistair Coker (HFD) has emerged as the top player in the group this season, and he was in fantastic form throughout this tournament. In the semis, he removed Andy Marsh (SOM), who had found a way past the wildcard that is Nick Staunton of Ireland in five. In the bottom half, Paul Boyle (BUX) had a tougher time and got through a great match 11/9 in the fifth against Mark Davis (CBE). Coker may have been the fresher in the final, but he played beautifully to keep the four-time champion at bay and a deserved straight games victory for his first National Championship.

Men's Over 45: One of the stories of the season has been Lee Jemmett (ESX). A former World Championship Team under-19 winner, he had decided to return to Masters Squash. And he did so with a bang. He won all four Regional Championships this season, all of them 3/2 in the finals, and was the top seed here. Up against him was a host of talent. Defending Champion Matt Holland (HPH) was out with injury, but now back and new in the group, a former over 40 National Champion, Tim Richards (KNT), lined up. Richards overcame Holland, who is still not at his best, and the final was much anticipated. But Jemmett was superb in the final and never let his opponent in. Straight games and a run of five Masters events.

Men's Over 40: Phil Rushworth (SRY) is the Sandown Sports pro and defending Champion. He had some big names line up against him but none could break through. Former over-35 British Open Champion Alex Preston (BUX) and Essex champion Rory Pennell fell to him. Meanwhile, Andrew Fenby (LDN) was carving his way through the bottom half of the draw, removing 3/4 seed Ross Kneller. (YKS) and no. 2 seed Dale Diment (AVN), both in four hard games. The final saw Rushworth at his best, making the game look easy. Control, movement and brilliant shots. 3/0 and another title to him.

Men's Over 35: James Snell (DVN) has been the top over 35 player in the UK for the last three years and has two British Open Masters and two Nationals as well as a number of Regionals. A class act. New in the group was another pro player in Lewis Doughty (LNH) who was seeded no. 2. He had the longest match in the tournament, beating Daniel West (SSX) 3/2 in nearly 70 minutes, but it always looked like these two exceptional players would meet in the final. With Squash Levels well over 20,000 the gallery were treated to a top-class match. Snell squeezed home in the first 14/12 but Doughty stayed strong and started getting the better of the long rallies. He took the next three games, and the title went to the new Wimbledon pro in an hour of great Squash.

Thanks were given to the Sponsors, Andy Murray and his iPROSPORTS Company, and to Colets for their superb hosting of the event and all the staff there. A special thanks to Colets pro Neal Brooker for all his support. The work of the England Squash Referees was acknowledged and appreciated, as was the support of the England Squash Masters Committee. But a special mention, as always, was made to the ESM Events Manager who pulls it all together, Brian 'Badger' Brock.

Day 4 – Saturday 28th February 2026

Semi finals day and top level matches across all the age groups.

Men’s Over 80: Robert Smith (KNT) continued his fine run with a 3-2 win over the No. 2 seed, Allan Whittow (BUX) in a match that ran past 30m on court. In the top half of the draw, the No. 1 seed Chris Ansell (BRK) had too much for John Culverhouse (KNT) to contend with, running out a 3-1 winner in 26m.

Men’s Over 75: No. 1 seed, Ian Graham (SSX) moved smoothly into the final with a 3-0 win over Andrew Edmondson (LCN). In the other semi final, Larry Grover had to come back from 2-1 down in a real tussle against Barry Featherstone (HPH) with Grover taking the last two games for a 3-2 win.

Men’s Over 70: In the over 70 group, Stuart Hardy (WLT), the top seed, unfortunately had to retire injured in the second game of his match against Dave Matthew (CNL). In the final, Matthew will meet Rob Ballingall (BUX), who came through in a tight 3-2 against John Hithersay (NHM).

Men’s Over 65: British Open Champion James Ockwell (MDX) managed to take a game off Bryan Beeson (NLD) but the No. 1 seed was too powerful and moved into the final with a 3-1 win. In the bottom half, Allen Barwise (CBA) pushed the No. 2 seed Mark Woodliffe (GLR) much harder than the final score suggests but in the end Woodliffe prevailed 3-0 to set up a fascinating final.

Men’s Over 60: No 1 seed Alex Betts carried on his fine form with a 3-0 win over Jon Foster (HPH). In the final Betts will face Simon Spencer (NOT) who came through a gruelling semi final match against Eamonn Price (HFD) 3-2 in over 40m.

Men’s Over 55: An upset in the first semi final with the No. 1 seed, Stuart Hargreaves (YKS) losing 3-0 to a fired up Sam Hanbury (SSX). In the final Hanbury will meet the Welsh No. 2 seed, Steve Evans who came through a marathon 49m encounter with Steve McLoughlin (HPH) 3-2.

Men’s Over 50: No 1 seed Alistair Coker (HFD) continued is smooth progress to the final with a comfortable 3-0 win over Andy Marsh (SOM). In the bottom half, another marathon encounter saw the No. 2 seed Paul Boyle (BUX) win through against Mark Davis (CBE) 3-2.

Men’s Over 45: No 1 seed Lee Jemmett (ESX) is looking ominously good and he dispatched Mick Biggs (MDX) comfortably 3-0. Tim Richards (KNT) similarly came through 3-0 against Matt Holland (HPH) to set up a fascinating final.

Men’s Over 40: Top seed and defending British champion Phil Rushworth (SRY) had too much for Rory Pennell (ESX) with Rushworth winning 3-0. In the final Rushworth will meet Andrew Fenby (LDN) whose dynamic play was too much for the No. 2 seed Dale Diment (AVN) with Fenby winning 3-1.

Men’s Over 35: Another semi final marred by injury as John Welton (AVN) had to retire in the second game of his match with the No. 1 seed James Snell (DVN). In the final Snell will face a tough challenge in the metronomic efficiency and extended rallies of the No. 2 seed Lewis Doughty who beat Dave Allman (AVN) 3-0 in a match that still lasted over 40m.

Women's Over 65: The No. 1 seed Jill Campion of Wales was pushed all the way by Tammy Bennett (SRY) after getting to a 2-0 lead. Campion finally winning 3-2 in just under 30m play. In the bottom half, Karen Hume continued her return to competition by defeating the No. 2 seed Lesley Sturgess (DYS) 3-1 and setting up another meeting with Campion in the final.

Women’s Over 60: Played as a single pool, Saturday saw the top two seeds, Rose Bamber (AVN) and Heather Tweedle (MSY) playing the 3-4 seeds, Isobel Smith (HFD) and Siobhan Garland (CNL) respectively. Bamber and Tweedle both comfortably won 3-0 and will meet in the deciding match on Sunday.

Women’s Over 55: The No. 1 seed Helen Barnard of Wales was made to work hard by Donna Cruickshank of Scotland. Barnard won through 3-1 but every game was closely contested. In the final, Barnard will meet the No. 2 seed Jillian Lilico (HFD) who beat Sarah Percy (YKS) 3-0 in the other semi final.

Women’s Over 50: Defending champion Rachel Calver (LEC), the top seed, lost the first game to Sarah Parr (BRK) before asserting her game and winning through to the final 3-1. There she will meet the No. 2 seed Christine McMullen (CHS) who was too strong for Louisa Dalwood (HFD) with McMullen winning their match also 3-1.

Women’s Over 45: Played as two pools of three, the No. 1 seed Kate Bradshaw won both her matches 3-0 against Kathryn Winterstein (HFD) and Kate Fuller (SFD). In the deciding match on Sunday, Bradshaw will meet the No. 2 seed Catherine Ruffle (CBA) who similarly won her match against Catherine Hazlewood (OFE) 3-0 after Natalie Lawrence (SOM) withdrew from the event.

Women’s Over 35: Another competition where the semi final in the top half went smoothly for the No. 1 seed Emmeline Gale who beat Keeley Steel (ESX) 3-0 but the other semi final was a real tussle between the No. 2 seed Kirsty West(CHS) who, after going 2-0 up, needed all five games to beat Kelly Eastment (SSX).

One day left to go and a schedule of excellent finals to look forward to on Sunday.

Day 3 – Friday 27th February 2026

Friday is quarter finals day and all the big seeds are in action and some fantastic contests between some of the top Masters players in the UK.

Men’s Over 80: Our elder statesmen of the game had early rounds today and the youngster of the group Robert Smith (KNT) had a winning start with a well taken 3-0 win over Terence Foley of Scotland. Tomorrow he will meet the no 2 seed and defending champion Allan Whittow (BUX). The other match saw John Culverhouse (KNT) take on Nigel Belle (KNT) for the pleasure of taking on the top seed and British Open Champion Chris Ansell tomorrow. That honour goes to Culverhouse who won 3-0.

Men’s Over 75: British Open and defending champion Ian Graham (SSX) eased through to the semi-final with a straight games win over Alastair McMeckan of Scotland. He will meet Andrew Edmondson (LCN) who surprised former champion Ian Ross (SCO) again in straight games. No 2 seed, World Masters champion Larry Grover, did not need long to dispose of Peter Arbuthnot (MDX) and will now face former champion Barry Featherstone (HPH) who had a struggle with Dave Bissett (SCO) losing the first and squeezing home 13-11 in the second before taking charge.

Men’s Over 70: Stuart Hardy (WLT), the top seed, found his range today and powered through Paul Gregory (SRY) 3-0 and will meet Dave Matthew (CNL) who beat last year’s England captain Robert Houdsworth (LNH) with nice symmetrical scores 11-9, 11-9, 11-9. But in the other half it all went astray as Rob Ballingall (BUX) playing his usual unorthodox game to great effect removed a bemused Alan Mackenzie (WKS) 3-0. He will meet last year’s finalist John Hithersay (NHM) who beat Paul Ekins (SRY) who must be ruing the loss of four game balls to take the second losing it 13-11 in a four-game loss.

Men’s Over 65: No 1 seed and European Champion the redoubtable Bryan Beeson (NLD) made short work of Tom Burton (HFD) in a quick 3-0 win and will now meet British Open Champion James Ockwell (MDX) who had a close match with Phil Wakefield (YKS) winning 3-0 but with two of the games going into overtime. In the other half Allen Barwise (CBA), the defending champion, prolonged his winning run over George Kousseff (HPH) and will now meet the many times champion Mark Woodliffe (GLR), the no 2 seed, who always had the edge over the talents of Richard Millman (NOR).

Men’s Over 60: No 1 seed Alex Betts had a more controlled match than yesterday’s five set slugfest and beat Ian Fenner-Evans of Wales in straight games. He now faces a former champion in Jon Foster (HPH) who had to recover from two games down against Andrew Eilfield (HFD) before taking control and winning in five games. Two old adversaries in Eamonn Price (HFD), the defending champion, and Darren Withey (BUX) always have an action packed match and it was Price who won 3-2 in over 50 minutes winning two of the vital games in overtime. In the semi-final he will meet Simon Spencer, the no 2 seed, who has had a great season on the Regional circuit and he overcame Richard Murphy of Wales in three games.

Men’s Over 55: What a series of quarter finals, three of the four of them all full blooded affairs going to five games and the results always in doubt. Top seed Stuart Hargreaves (YKS) had to overcome the talented shot making of Steve Dodridge (BRK) edging home 12-10 in the fifth in just under an hour. In the semi-final he will meet Sam Hanbury (SSX) who had a similar battle with Mark Steeden (KNT) getting home in the fifth. Second seed Steve Evans of Wales was nearly out but salvaged the third game 16-14 and then held on to take the match in five. The series was broken when Steve McLoughlin (HPH) powered through in straight games against Steve Jukes (SOM) and now meets the Wales No 1.

Men’s Over 50: No 1 seed Alistair Coker (HFD) controlled the power hitting of Wayne Beglan (SRY) and with the ball fizzing around the court won through in straight games. He next meets Andy Marsh (SOM) who confounded the seedings and the mercurial talents of former champion Nick Staunton of Ireland winning in five games in just under an hour. In the other half the seedings ran true as Mark Davis (CBE) seeded 3/4 was too good on the day for Adam Dominey (IOW) and second seed Paul Boyle (BUX) overcame his regular England teammate Matthew Stephenson (YKS) in four.

Men’s Over 45: No 1 seed Lee Jemmett (ESX) had a slow start against Colets star Stuart Junor (SRY) losing the first 12-10 but he eased into the match and took the next three without mishap. In the next round he will meet Mick Biggs (MDX) who played superbly well to upset the seedings and beat Paul Warner (BUX) in three close games. In the other half defending champion Matt Holland (HPH), another Colets player, had a real battle with Colin Griggs (CBE) and having lost the third 12-10 had to battle for the fourth and fifth to progress. In the semi-final he meets Tim Richards (KNT), new in the age group and a former Over 40 National champion.

Men’s Over 40: Top seed and defending British champion Phil Rushworth (SRY) had an uncharacteristically untidy game to start his match with former Over 35 British Open champion Alex Preston (BUX) but steadied himself to take the next three. In the semi-final he will meet former England Over 35 International Rory Pennell (ESX) who powered through Matthew Sampson (CBE) in three. In the other half a slight upset as Andrew Fenby (LDN) won two vital 12-10 games in a 3-1 win over Ross Kneller (YKS), a 3/4 seed. His semi-final opponent will be the no 2 seed Dale Diment (AVN) who maintained steady pressure on Steven Davies (BFD) winning in three good games.

Men’s Over 35: The defending champion is James Snell (DVN) who has been unbeaten on the England Masters scene for three years. He looks in imperious form here as he negated the flamboyant shot making of Gbenga Adeyi (BFD) to book his semi-final berth. Here he will play John Welton (AVN) who subdued the lively play of Ryan Atherton (LCN) who has had a great season. In the other half Davis Allman (AVN) controlled his match with Oliver Hudson (CHS) and in spite of some terrific rallies kept ahead with a mixture of power and control. Straight games. He will meet Lewis Doughty (LEC) who had a marathon battle with Daniel West (SSX). The first game lasted 22 minutes with some 100 shot rallies thrown in. It went to West 12/10 but in an equally attritional second Doughty took it 13/11. West took a breather in the third! The fourth returned to the intensity of earlier and went 11/9 to West. Doughty got a good start in the fifth and kept the pressure on to take the decider. 68 minutes. A magnificent match!

Women's Over 65: Jill Campion of Wales has won this tournament before and is always the player to beat. Sue Pynegar (NOT) had a good try with a second game going to her 17-15 but Campion prevailed 3-1. She will meet in the semi-final a local star Tammy Bennett (SRY) who beat another Wales player in Lynne Davies in five games having been 2-0 up and looking in charge. In the other half Karen Hume (KNT) making a welcome return was too good for Sian Johnson (WAL) and in the semi will meet defending champion Lesley Sturgess (DYS) who was within a point of disaster being 2-0 down to Julie-Anne Pegram (SFK) but hanging on to take the third 15-13 and then the next two games.

Women's Over 60: This event played in a round robin pool and Heather Tweedle (MSY), the defending champion, got off to a winning start with a 16-14 first game which was converted into a 3-0, the third game 12-10, against Isobel Smith (HFD). Meanwhile, World Champion finalist Rose Bamber (AVN) overcame Siobhan Garland (CNL) in straight games.

Women's Over 55: Defending champion Helen Barnard of Wales eased into the tournament with a straight games win over Kath Gray (CBA) and now meets Donna Cruickshank of Scotland who had a similar result against Jackie Gregory (ESX). In the other half Sarah Percy (YKS) had a great five game win over Wendy Hiscox (LDN) going 2-1 down but squeezing home 11-9 in the fourth before taking the fifth. In the semi final she will meet British Open champion Jillian Lilico (HFD) who was too strong for Alison Goy (NOT).

Women’s Over 50: Defending champion Rachel Calver (LEC), the top seed, had to work to overcome a determined challenge from Debbie Locke (WKS). In the next round she will meet former champion Sarah Parr (BRK) who had a super match with Kate Smith (YKS) coming back from 2-0 down and sneaking the fourth 12-10 to win in five games. Second seed Christine McMullen (CHS) was too strong for Libby Montgomery (HFD) and booked her semi final slot with a straight games win where she will meet Louisa Dalwood (HFD), a former winner of this event, who was too good for Catherine Monday (SRY) winning in straight games.

Women's Over 35: This event started today and Helen Walsh (HFD) secured a quarter-final spot against Rosie Hamilton (HPH) with a good four-game win, it mainly hinging on a 15-13 third game. Her prize is a match with top seed Emmeline Gale (SRY) in the morning. Meanwhile Keeley Steel (ESX) overcame Laura Marshall (BUX) in straight games and now meets Michelle Knight (OFE). Sophie Beake (BRK) was in control of a straight games against Sara Gardner (LEC) and she will now play Kelly Eastment (SSX). Carina Miles (DVN) beat Jodie Hodgkins (WMD) in a competitive straight games and now meets no 2 seed Kirsty West (CHS). The ladies will play two rounds tomorrow with the final on Sunday.

So the stage is set for the semi-finals of the National Championships. All the players are in with a chance of being crowned champion on Sunday but some incredible squash lies ahead and there will be some magnificent matches tomorrow. Spectators are welcome at Colets.

Day 2 – Thursday 26th February 2026

Today the higher placed seeded players all joined the competition and there were some fantastic matches and some very close calls with vital ranking points for England team selection at stake as well as the chance to advance towards the final stages of the National Championships.

Men’s Over 75: This group started off with a terrific match between Alastair McMeckan of Scotland and Mick Broomhall (CHS) with the Scot triumphing in five entertaining games. Meanwhile former European Champion Ian Ross also of Scotland was powering through against David Rose (BRK). Two Colets players in Geoff Howes (SRY) and Nick Eyles (SRY) were also in action but came unstuck, Geoff to another Scot in Dave Bissett and Nick to Peter Arbuthnot (MDX), both in four games.

Men’s Over 70: Defending champion Stuart Hardy (WLT) had a test against the talented Paul Reader (HPH) who has been away from the group for a while but still retained wonderful shot making and pushed Hardy all over the court before the champion won in four. There was an upset as Paul Gregory (SRY) beat Mike Quartley (CHS) in four, the last going to him 11-9. Dave Matthew (CNL), 3/4 seed calmly progressed as did Paul Ekins (SRY), similarly seeded. John Hithersay (NHM), last year’s runner up, was too good for John Petruschke (BRK) as was second seed Alan Mackenzie (WRK) against Keith Hibberd (KNT).

Men’s Over 65: Current European Masters Champion Bryan Beeson (NLD) produced a masterful display against John Winfield (OFE) and will now face Tom Burton (HFD) who beat Tim Luker (IOW) 3-0. There was a battle royale with Phil Wakefield (YKS) narrowly getting the better of Stephen Edmondson (CBA) coming back from 2-0 down to take the match in five and do his England prospects a lot of good. There were wins for Allen Barwise (CBA), Richard Millman (NOR) and Mark Woodliffe (GLR), the best of which was George Kousseff (HPH) coming back from 2-1 down to beat Alan Borrill (LCN) 11-9, 13-11 to clinch his place against Barwise in the quarters.

Men’s Over 60: Alex Betts (MDX) has been in great form this year and is seeded one. David Gray (CBA) always a talented player really got into the match and from 2-1 up it looked like a major upset was in sight but Betts is a great battler and he composed himself and ran through the next two for a five game win. He now meets Ian Fenner-Evans of Wales who recovered from 2-0 down to beat Mike Leonard (BUX) also in five. Andrew Eilfield (HFD) and Jon Foster (HPH) both progressed in straight games as did defending champion Eamonn Price (HFD). In another cracking match Darren Withey (BUX) had to recover from 2-1 down to overcome Steve Martin (YKS) in five. Wales star Richard Murphy scored an impressive four game win over Marvin Rust (HFD) with the middle two games going to extra time.

Men’s Over 55: Former British Open Champion Stuart Hargreaves (YKS) is top seed here and untroubled booked a quarter final with Steve Dodridge (BRK) after both of them secured 3-0 wins. Sam Hanbury (SSX) played a solid match to beat Courtney Downing (SPE) and in his quarter will meet Mark Steeden of Kent, the 3/4 seed. The 3/4 seed in the other half, Stephen McLoughlin (HPH), overcame the fierce hitting of Simon Thompson (MDX) in four. He will meet Steve Jukes (SOM) who had an excruciatingly close 3-1 with Nigel Rowe (WLT) winning 12-10 in the fourth. Meanwhile second seed Steve Evans of Wales progressed and is in McLoughlin’s section if they both get through tomorrow.

Men’s Over 50: Top seed Alistair Coker (HFD) progressed in imperious style against Steve Rogers (OFE) and will now meet last year’s finalist Wayne Beglan (SRY). Adam Dominey (IOW) booked his quarter final slot and he will meet Mark Davis (CBE) who had a battle with Jago Nardelli (MDX) winning in four. Ireland ace Nick Staunton, a former champion, eased through to his quarter against Atif Siddiqi (LDN) and now meets Andy Marsh (SOM) who had a brutal five setter with Daniel Reed of Surrey. Matt Stephenson (YKS) will meet Paul Boyle (BUX) in a match they have played before many times.

Men’s Over 45: Top seed Lee Jemmett (ESX) has been unbeaten at all four Regionals this season but had a tricky match with Adam Safwat (ESX), son of squash legend Ahmed Safwat. In a match full of wonderful squash and inventive stroke play Jemmett proved the stronger winning in straight games. He will meet Colets star Stuart Junor (SRY) after Roland Steere (SRY) had to retire. Multiple Masters Champion Matt Holland (HPH) returning from injury is seeded 3/4 and he is in line to meet Tim Richards (KNT), both going through without trauma, and although a quarter final to play look destined for a semi final spot.

Men’s Over 40: The defending champion Phil Rushworth (SRY) is top seed and eased through his match with his typically smooth brand of squash. No 2 seed Dale Diment (AVN) was also untroubled. Matt Sampson (CBE) could force his way into the mix after a fine 3-1 win over George Shoulder (HPH) as could Rory Pennell (ESX).

Men’s Over 35: Defending champion James Snell (DVN) ominously awaits his quarter final opponent but there were some fine contests today with Ryan Atherton (LCN) outlasting James Simpson (SRY) in five gruelling games as did Gbenga Adeyi (BFD) overcoming Simon Roach (MDX) 15-13 in the fifth. In an entertaining match Colets Club Pro Neal Brooker (SRY) took on the formidable Daniel West (SSX) and with some lovely squash went down to West who is in superb form.

Women’s Over 50: Early rounds in this event saw former National Champion Sarah Parr (BRK) beat Rhian Davies of Wales in straight games although the third was a close 12-10. Catherine Monday (SRY) overcame former champion Linda Pritchard (SPE) 3-1, again the final game being clinched 12-10. Debbie Locke (WKS) beat Michelle Higgins (ESX) 3-1 and again to maintain the theme the final game was 12-10.

So the National Championships are all set up for some thrilling matches tomorrow with the seeded players clashing to earn a place in the semi finals. Some top class Masters Squash is anticipated and spectators are welcome at Colets.

Day 1 - Wednesday 25th February 2026

The Championships got underway today at the superb Colets Health & Fitness Club in Thames Ditton, Surrey. There were some 250 players registered initially, but inevitably, some dropouts from that number. The larger groups had early rounds, and there were some good matches and a number of home club players in action.

Men's Over 65:   There was an excellent match with Nick Peel (KNT) and Ripley Oyler (BRK) that went the full distance, with Peel emerging the winner in five games.

Men's Over 60:   David Gray had a long drive down from Cumbria, but it didn't affect his game as he kept on top of Mark Taylor (WKS), winning in three games of solid squash. Former England player Nigel Bacon (ESX) was very efficient against Steve Besant (HPH) never giving him a chance to settle into the match. Another England man Steve Martin (YKS) showed his class against Jonathan Wills (CNL) but the best match of the round saw Wales star Ian Fenner-Evans clinch his match against Avon pro Kirk Woodward with three close and competitive games. There was an interesting match as Gordon McManus (KNT) playing down a group overcame Tony Kaye (YKS) in five close games. A foot fault at the end of the fifth didn't help Kaye's cause.  Another England player Mike Leonard (BKS) returning after injury was in control against David Harris (LCN) and Marvin Rust (HFD) was too accomplished for Colets man Andy Hall. Wales International Richard Murphy removed Mike Wardle (BRK) and in the tie of the round, Peter Call (BRK) outlasted Keith Winfield (HFD) recovering from 2/1 down to win a great contest 3/2.

Men's Over 55:   Only a few matches here but they were well fought and close. Shropshire's Courtney Downing put a good match together to just edge Carl Elsby of Wales in three tight games. Ross Burns (MDX) had a fine win against James Gardner (SRY) taking it in four with the second going to the Surrey man 15/13 which seemed to take the edge from him. Tim Smith (CNL) was an England player last year and now returning after injury.  He showed good form here and progressed against Tony Balmer (MDX) 3/0. Simon Thompson (MDX) got the better of Vinod Duraikan (CMB) in four good games.

Men's Over 50:   Jago Nardelli (MDX) recorded a comfortable four game win over Edward Prust (SPE) and Daniel Reed (SRY) removed Colets player James Lobban. Steve Rogers (OXF) had his hands full with Jason Potter (ESX) and was two points from defeat before rallying to take the match in five.  Atif Siddiqi (GLN) was impressive taking out the powerful hitting of John Lambert (LNH). Wiltshire's Julian Beckett crafted a good win against Jonathan Graham (HPH) with an enjoyable all over the court match.

Men's Over 45:   Home player Brett Cockbill (SRY) was outplayed by the very classy Adam Safwat (ESX) and Dean Newberry (SSX) was merciless in a hard-hitting match against Dale Mccarter (WLT). Chris Bartley (SRY) put the home club on the score sheet with a straight games win over Nigel Lee (SRY) and Robert Dale (SRY) beat Nathan Miller (SSX) 3/0. Another home club success came when Stuart Junor (SRY) won a good tussle with Allan Wilson (DOR) which hinged on a13/11 third when they were at a game each.

Tomorrow will see the higher-seeded players come into the event and some great squash is expected across all the categories.  Spectators are welcome at Colets.
